Final Fantasy XIII.org Final Fantasy XIII Battle SystemFinal Fantasy XIII battle system returns to us with the traditional ATB
(active time battle) system unlike new ones in Final Fantasy X and Final
Fantasy XII. Instead, those have a more active style, and Final Fantasy XIII
will be even more dynamic, and will not look like previous titles. Anyway, like any other Final Fantasy, you have the ability to physically attack the
enemy with your weapon, take a look down.
Navigation Map
Director Motomu Toriyama has emphasized the fact that Final Fantasy XIII battles will be all about 360+ of movement, with enemies assailing your character from all sides, even dropping down from above. The map in the upper-left-hand portion of the screen would seem to function as a "map" so much as a tool for selecting individual targets and gauging the distance between them and your party members. Why not opt for a more traditional target-selection scheme? The over-the-top, ever shifting camerawork would simply not for it in a traditional manner - you'd never have any idea where your cursor was.
Overlock
The Overlock System is the only new Final Fantasy XIII gameplay that has yet been officially revealed. The main character snaps small metallic balls embedded in her fingertips together, causing everything around her to slow down drastically - almost halt. By contrast, however, she moves as quickly as normal, possibly allowing for crazy fighting game-esque juggle combos. When she invokes "Overlock", the gauge in the upper-right-hand side slowly depletes, suggesting it will take the place of the tradition Limit Break-esque system in Final Fantasy XIII.
Command Attack and ATB Gauge
Individual turns seem to consist of multiple command selections, as evidenced by the string of five command boxes and ATB gauge at the bottom of the screen. The loopy camera and vast range of battle motion seems to be allowed by this scheme. One will select several commands listed on the left along with an ATB cost (no evidence of MP anywhere) until your ATB points run out, and the game then will string them together in a visually-pleasing way, causing a simple "Attack" to be represented in any number of ways, from a sword strike to a vertical flip kick - whatever looks coolest given the string. In additional to familiar FF commands, several new ones are visible in the menus: "V Strike", "Aerial", "Shoot", "Lure". With the main character reportedly having the ability to manipulate time and gravity, it's probably safe to expect a heavy emphasis on aerial attacks, launching of enemies skyward, and juggles.
